kick in the pants

Here are a few thoughts from an article I read for my missions class - they are kicking me in the pants, and I sincerely hope the same effect happens to you.

"A young man in Bible school offered to help David Wilkerson years ago when he was ministering on the streets of New York City. Wilkerson asked him how much time he spent in prayer. The young student estimated about 20 minutes a day. Wilkerson told him, 'Go back, young man. Go back for a month and pray two hours a day, every day for 30 days. When you've done that, come back. Come back, and I might consider turning you loose on the streets where there is murder, rape, violence and danger... If I sent you out now on 20 minutes a day, I'd be sending a soldier into battle without any weapons, and you would get killed.'"

"Here's a challenge for you: Read everything Paul says about prayer, then ask yourself, 'Am I willing to pray like that?' Paul said that he prayed, 'night and day... with tears... without ceasing...with thankfulness... in the Spirit... constantly... boldly... for godly sorrow... against the evil one.'"

"There are too many over-fed, under-motivated Christians hiding behind the excuse that God has not spoken to them."

Rant:
It didn't really kick me in the pants, it made me frustrated. What makes the missionary think 2 hours is the appropriate amount of time to spend in prayer? Does he really think evil will overcome if you only spend 20 minutes? And if 2 hours will make you "holy" enough to minister on the streets, why not make it four? Heck, if we just spent 24 hours straight maybe Jesus would come back and everything would be taken care of.

I know you're seeing this through your lens of a passion for prayer. I can't help seeing in through my lens of an allergic reaction to legalism.

And so I think you should loan me your shirt;)

response -

I didn't mean for it to be a legalistic thing - that is what you get when you single things out of context... I just posted those quotes because too often we forget the power of prayer and how prayer and missions - any missions whether it is in a classroom in China or in the Union at UNL - should be intertwined. Just some thoughts to think about - nothing forceful.

And Betsy, you can borrow anything you want.

And Brady - you rock my face off! It amazes me how God puts people in my life who I bond with right away, and you are one of those few. I look forward to what God is going to do through you over the next five years!
